EDGE DAM CONTROLLING APPARATUS FOR STRIP CASTING AND THE METHOD THEREOF

An apparatus and a method for controlling edge dams in a continuous strip caster are provided to prevent leakage of molten steel generated between casting rolls and the edge dams according to the progress of casting in the continuous strip caster by properly controlling horizontal positions and vertical heights of the edge dams. In a continuous strip caster having twin roll type casting rolls(1), an apparatus for controlling edge dams(7) in the continuous strip caster includes: horizontal position detectors attached to side faces of the edge dams to measure horizontal positions of the edge dams attached to the casting rolls; horizontal cylinders installed at positions corresponding to attachment heights of the horizontal position detectors to push the edge dams toward the casting rolls; vertical position detectors for measuring initial position heights of the edge dams; vertical cylinders vertically attached to lower portions of the edge dams to adjust vertical positions of the edge dams; hydraulic valve stands(20) connected to the horizontal and vertical cylinders by hydraulic pipes(19) to provide the horizontal and vertical cylinders with hydraulic pressures; and a control device(21) for controlling the horizontal and vertical cylinders to move the horizontal and vertical positions of the edge dams when the horizontal positions of the edge dams of the horizontal position detectors are changed into values that are at least a preset value. The horizontal position detectors include edge dam upper position detectors and an edge dam lower position detector(15). The vertical position detectors are edge dam height position detectors(17).
