The method involves compressing an ignitable gas mixture in a combustion chamber (2) of an internal combustion engine (1) in a compression stroke, where the mixture has the remaining gas. The gas mixture is self-ignited during the compression stroke. The remaining gas amount and/or the injecting time for a working cycle is changed to an intermediate value, which deviates from a value associated to a target load, during load change of an output load to the target load.
