The envelope making method of Specification 746,695 is modified in that gum is applied collectively to areas of the sealing flaps with the envelopes arranged in a tightly stepped or shingled assembly by a plain roller, and is later applied to the side flaps individually by a contoured roller, the envelope blanks having been speeded up to produce a loosely shingled assembly. Blanks 1 are fed at high speed between folders 6 to fold in the end flaps 2, and are then arranged in closely shingled formation by slow speed rollers for gumming of their flaps 4 by an application 14. They are then speeded up to a velocity between that in the tightly shingled formation and their initial velocity by further rollers to expose the leading areas 34 of the side flaps 2 for gumming by a contoured applicator 38. The final folding is carried out by drums 43, 47 as in the earlier Specification, the drums accelerating the envelopes to the inital entry speed of the blanks.
