PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical translation technique capable of improving translation accuracy.

SOLUTION: The mechanical translation device 2 comprises a generation rule searching means 241 for searching a generation rule to a partial hypothesis from a rule table 114 storing generation rules restricted so that the symbol string of a translation destination language of the right side of a generation rule in synchronous context free grammar starts from a terminal symbol; a generation rule with word range generation means 242 for adding a word range showing the range of an input sentence covered by non-terminal symbols of the generation rule to the generation rule; a partial hypothesis score calculation means 243 for forming a translated word and a word range contained in the generation rule with word range as a new partial hypothesis, and successively extending the new partial hypothesis in the arrangement order of non-terminal symbols on the translation destination language side of the generation rule from the beginning to the end of the sentence by applying the generation rule from top to down to calculate partial hypothesis scores; and a hypothesis search means 244 for searching a hypothesis with maximum partial hypothesis score of applicable hypotheses.
