PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus where the width of a recording material capable of paper passing can be reduced compared with the conventional one. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with: a temperature detection element 102; and a paper width sensor 101. The temperature detection element 102 is arranged at a region where a recording material with a width larger than that which is detected by the paper width sensor 101 passes through, and when a recording material with a small width passes through, control temperature is made higher than that when a recording material with a large width passes through, and the temperature is increased at a prescribed gradient from the top end to the rear end.
