PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus achieving both high image quality and prolongation of the life without adding a new device. SOLUTION: A charging device is equipped with a contact charging type charging roller 2, and can be attached to/detached from a photoreceptor drum. Abrasive material 25 adheres to the surface of the charging roller 2 in an initial state before the charging device is attached to the photoreceptor drum. When the charging device is attached, a refreshing mode is started, and bias having the same polarity as the abrasive material 25 adhering to the surface of the electrifying roller 2 is applied thereto. By the application of the bias, the abrasive material 25 on the surface of the charging roller 2 is released from the charging roller 2 and moves to the photoreceptor drum.
