The method involves locating associations present in the character strings using a specification stored in the computer. The located associations are then evaluated using a rule stored in the computer, with cohesive associations, referred to as association strings, which is given a higher valuation for the similarity of the character strings than non-cohesive associations. A value, particularly a numerical value, is derived to measure the similarity of the two character strings from the evaluation of the located associations according to another rule stored in the computer.
