The method involves checking whether the valve (1) changes from a normal position to a defined fixed position in the event of a defined operating situation. It involves defining a checking position of a bypass valve (13) so that a defined fluid flow passes through he bypass valve and adjusting the flow through the bypass valve so that in its defined fixed position a defined pressure difference exists across the bypass valve that can be detected for seal testing and/or movement time and/or distance detection. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for functionally testing a safety valve.
