PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can detect the document size accurately at all times regardless of the type of a document or the closing method of an original cover. SOLUTION: After the length of a document in the sub-scanning direction is detected by a document sensor (SP3), a light source for detecting document is lighted to irradiate light from above the document (SP4), the length of the document in the main scanning direction is detected by reading the light transmitted the outside of the document region through a CCD image sensor (SP 6), the document size is determined based on the length of the document in the main scanning direction and the length in the sub-scanning direction, and then a copy sheet is selected (SP7).
