The invention relates to an apparatus (1) for preparing a beverage, for instance baby milk, from water and an instant product, for instance formula. The apparatus comprises a water supply system (2) for supplying water, a heating device (11) for sterilizing water by heating it; and a cooling device (10) for cooling water heated in the heating device (11). The cooling device (10) uses water from the water supply system (2) as cooling-water. The water that is sterilized in the heating device (11), has preferably previously been used in the cooling device (11) as cooling-water. The cooling device (10) may comprise a counter flow heat exchanger.
