The sensor (10) has a measuring unit (12) i.e. thermo couple, with a temperature-dependent characteristic and a catalytic coating for chemical reaction of hydrocarbon. A reference unit (14) i.e. resistance thermometer, has a temperature-dependent electrical characteristic. A temperature-dependent characteristic unit determines the hydrocarbon-content depending on the comparison of the temperature-dependent characteristic of the measuring unit and the electrical characteristic of the reference unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for measuring content of hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.
