The method involves detecting actual resistance values of an electrical resistor heating unit (10). A change of resistance values of the electrical resistor heating unit is determined after a preset starting period by a control unit (100) e.g. microcontroller, where the starting period is based on starting characteristics of the heating unit and thermal mass of an electrical heating system. The electrical heating system is controlled based on the actual resistance values and the change of resistance values of the heating unit. An independent claim is also included for a control device provided for an electrical heating system.
