PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assemble a rope brake 90 in a driving device 40 in an elevator having a driving device 40 comprising a main rope 3 wound around a sheave 42 to reciprocally move a car 1 or the like, and a belt transmission mechanism 70 for pressing an arc-shaped area of the main rope 3 against the sheave 42 and driving the main rope. SOLUTION: The rope brake 90 to be operated in conjunction with the operation of a tensioning assembly 80 for providing the tension to a belt 46 is provided on the driving device 40. If the belt 46 is broken, a spring 83 of the tensioning assembly 80 turns a lever 82 around a shaft 81.
