<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which allows compatibility of a black and white display both in a transmissive mode and in a reflective mode in addition to a wide viewing angle transmissive display with no occurrence of gray scale inversion, at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: The lateral electric field type liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal layer interposed between a first substrate and a second substrate placed opposite to each other, has a transmissive region and a reflective region in each of pixels arranged in a matrix, and has a pixel electrode and a common electrode to apply voltage to the liquid crystal layer arranged on the first substrate, wherein a retardation plate of approximately λ/2, a retardation plate of approximately λ/4, and a polarizing plate are provided sequentially from the first substrate side on a surface of the first substrate on the side opposite to the liquid crystal layer, and a retardation plate of approximately λ/4, and a polarizing plate are provided sequentially from the second substrate side on a surface of the second substrate on the side opposite to the liquid crystal layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
