PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide oligonucleotides with cationic internucleoside linkages useful in antisense drugs and in nucleic acid hybridization assays for diagnostic or clinical monitoring purposes. SOLUTION: The oligonucleotides have at least one cationic internucleoside linkage having structure I, wherein W, X, Y, Z, R1, R2, and R3are as defined in the present specification, P* represents an asymmetric phosphorus atom capable of existing in two distinct stereoisomeric configurations, and further wherein the linkage is stereouniform.
