PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic flaw detector having high inspection working efficiency, even when there is an obstacle between the probe and a flaw near the surface. SOLUTION: The ultrasonic flaw detector comprises an ultrasonic probe that converts an input electrical signal into ultrasonic waves, transmits it into a specimen, receives the ultrasonic waves that propagate through the specimen, and converts the ultrasonic waves into an electrical signal, and a transmitter-receiver for driving the ultrasonic probe and receiving the electrical signal from the ultrasonic probe. The ultrasonic waves propagating through the ultrasonic probe are longitudinal waves. The ultrasonic waves propagating through the specimen are transverse waves whose wave front reaches the surface of the specimen with propagation, through the specimen and that generates false surface SV wave on the surface of the specimen. On the boundary surface between the ultrasonic probe and the specimen, the longitudinal waves into which the input electric signal is converted is mode-converted into transverse waves, and the false surface SV waves, propagating on the surface of the specimen, are converted into longitudinal waves.
