The present invention relates to axial flow chromatography columns and methods for separating one or more analytes in a liquid by the use of such columns. The column comprises a first port for mobile phase and a transverse fluid distribution channel for distributing fluid uniformly throughout the packed bed. The first port comprises an inlet and an outlet having a passageway therebetween, the outlet having an asymmetric configuration relative to the fluid distribution channel.
