811,922. Turbine and compressor blades. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. March 9, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 7128/55. Class 110 (3). The blades of an axial-flow turbine or compressor have passages 15 extending longitudinally therethrough, and also have rootfixing portions 12 and elongated stem portions 14 between the root and profile portions 13 of the blades. Spacer members 16 are mounted on the rotor disc 10 and extend between the concave and convex faces of adjacent blade profile portions, the ends of the spacers being shaped to correspond with the blade faces. The spacers form the outer wall of the spaces between the blade stems and the inner wall of the working fluid passages between the blades and they are slidably engaged on complementary features on the rotor disc in an axial or essentially-axial direction. The blade passages 15 open out into the spaces between the blade stems. The embodiment shows a turbine in which the blade roots are of fir-tree shape and engage in axially or essentially axially-directed slots formed at the periphery of the rotor disc 10. The tips 19 of the stubs between the slots of the rotor disc are shaped to provide a fixing means for the fixing portions 17 of the spacer members 16. Closure plates 21, 22 are secured to the faces of the rotor disc to close the channels between the blade stems 14, and cooling fluid is supplied to the channels through radial passages 20 in the plate 21, the fluid passing through the blade passages 15 and discharging at the blade tips. Specification 811,921, [Group XXII], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 687,507.
