A control method involves a cleaning unit which consists of a clean fabric coil (4) with spindle (3), a soiled cloth spindle (5), a drive (14) for alternating forward- and reverse-coiling of the cleaning fabric (12), and a detection unit for detecting the feed of the cleaning fabric (12). In the control unit (15), the cleaning fabric thickness of the cleaning fabric (12) provided in the cleaning unit (1) is stored. The direction of rotation of the clean cloth spindle (3) or the soiled cloth spindle (5) is detected and stored in the control unit (15). In the cleaning unit, the thickness of the cleaning fabric and the direction of movement the instantaneous diameter of the clean cloth coil or soiled cloth coil is determined.
