Installation for melting vitrifiable materials includes at least two distinct melting modules (A(1), (B(2)). Module (A(1)) is mainly equipped with heating units comprising overhead burners and/or submerged electrodes. Module (B(2)) is mainly equipped with heating units comprising submerged burners. Preferred Features: The volume and or hearth surface area of module (B(2)) is at least 1.5, 2 or 3 times lower than that of module (A(1)), or conversely. Module (B(2)) has a unit for the recovery of fumes that, after optional treatment, are passed to module (A(1)) for thermal extraction. Modules (A(1)) and (B(2)) are both, directly or indirectly via transfer pipelines (4, 5), connected to a mixing module (C(3)) having agitation and/or heating units, such as bubblers, mechanical agitators, submerged electrodes, and submerged burners. The transfer pipes (4, 5) have thermal conditioning elements. Module (C(3)) is connected directly or via a transfer pipeline (6) to a fiber drawing unit or to a refining unit. Passage of the vitrifiable materials during melting or in the melted state from modules (A(1)) and (B(2)) to module (C(3)) can be achieved by gravity flow, which involves raising at least one of the modules (A(1)) and (B(2)) with respect to module (C(3)). Module (B(2)) can be connected either directly or via a pipeline to module (A(1)), notably in its downstream section. Module (A(1)) can be connected to a pipeline that supplies a fiber drawing unit or to a refining unit, and module (B(2)) can be connected to the fiber drawing unit or to the refining unit, notably in its upstream section. Module (A(1)) can be connected to module (B(2)), and the latter (B(2)) can be connected to a channel leading to a fiber drawing unit or a refining unit. An Independent claim is given for: (a) a process using the invented installation; and (b) utilization of the invented installation to produce molten vitrifiable materials for production of fiber, especially by internal and external centrifugation and mechanical and/or pneumatic drawing. |
