The invention relates to an instrument panel tubular cross member equipped with a centring device (28) which is incorporated into the tubular cross member (24) by being formed from the material of the tube, and the centring device (28) comprises a ring (30) delimiting a cylindrical hole (32) of circular cross section, the ring (30) having an exterior surface (34) in a bearing plane substantially parallel to the axis of the tube (24), the cylindrical surface of the hole (32) and the exterior surface (34) being devoid of any burrs. The centring device is formed by a flow drilling operation. In the transverse part of the tube (24) which comprises the centring device, the tube (24) has a cross section elongated in the direction of the axis of the hole in the centring device.
