Disclosed is an aqueous coating composition exhibiting excellent thixotropic property, which enables to obtain a coating material having good water resistance and a coating film having good design property. Specifically disclosed is an aqueous coating composition characterized by containing a urethane compound represented by the general formula (1) below as a component (A), a flake pigment as a component (B), and a water-soluble resin other than the component (A) as a component (C). (In the formula, R<SUP>1</SUP> represents a residue obtained by removing hydroxyl groups from an n-valent alcohol having 2-20 carbon atoms; R<SUP>2</SUP> represents a hydrocarbon group which may have a urethane bond; R<SUP>3</SUP> represents an alkyl group having 8-30 carbon atoms; R<SUP>4</SUP> represents an alkylene group having 2-3 carbon atoms; k represents a number of 1-500; and n and m respectively represent a number of 2-10.)
