<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control the position of image formation in an image forming apparatus of a line exposure system and an image forming method using the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: Registration mark images IregL and IregR are formed on an intermediate transfer belt 81 and their positions are detected by the position detecting sensors 25L and 25R. Based on the detection results, the turning on of an LED array 233 is controlled and, thereby, the position where an electrostatic latent image is formed on a photoreceptor 21 is adjusted. In this case, the registration mark images IregL and IregR are formed such that, among a plurality of light emitting modules 2331 and 2332 composing the LED array, only the LED elements of single light emitting modules 2332L and 2332R are turned on. This prevents the shape distortion of the registration mark images resulting from the joint between the light emitting modules.
