摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surveying instrument for detecting the horizontal position and vertical position of a collimation target without rotating a surveying instrument body in the whole circumference direction and without tilting a telescope in the high-low angle direction with respect to the vertical direction. SOLUTION: The surveying instrument includes a horizontal rotating mechanism 38 for horizontally rotating a support stand section 8 constituting a part of the surveying instrument body 7, a vertical rotating mechanism 61 for vertically tilting the telescope 9 disposed in the support stand section, and a collimation target retrieving device 20 that is disposed in the surveying instrument body 7 and retrieves a collimation target 3. The collimation target retrieving device 20 comprises an imaging optical system that includes a bright spot image based on a guide light 15 and images an ambient image of the horizontal direction and the high-low angle direction, an image processing section 21 for calculating the horizontal coordinate position and the high-low angle direction with respect to the reference direction of the bright spot image by signal-processing the bright spot image, and a control section 22 for controlling the horizontal rotating mechanism 38 and the vertical rotating mechanism 61 so that the optical axis of the telescope 9 is turned to the existing direction of the collimation target 3 based on the coordinate position.
