PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tensioner of a governor device for an elevator, allowing easy installation of equipment to a periphery of the tensioner by building a damping device for vibration suppression in a weight without increasing the total plane projected area of the tensioner of the governor device. SOLUTION: There is provided a damping device 30 for suppressing and damping its vibration when a governor rope 9 is vertically oscillated together with a weight 14. The damping device 30 has a shoe 34 which is elastically brought into contact with a guide frame 24 of a guide mechanism 20 for guiding the vertical movement of the weight 14 by the urging force of a spring 36. The vibration of the weight 14 is suppressed and damped by the friction force of contact of the shoe 34 with the guide frame 24.
