PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently manufacturing an alcohol compound useful as a production intermediate of an effective ingredient of an insecticide with a reduced environmental load. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of the alcohol compound represented by general formula (3) (wherein X<SB>1</SB>, X<SB>2</SB>, X<SB>3</SB>and X<SB>4</SB>are each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl group; Z is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; R is an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or the like; and n is an integer of 2 or 3) comprises causing a phenol compound to react with a haloalcohol compound in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst in a bilayer system of a water-immiscible organic solvent and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide.
