A device for separating a chapter of a disc recorder automatically is provided to set the chapter automatically by comparing video frames, and thus to navigation information which is formed by the chapter searching an image requested by a user easily. A device for separating a chapter of a disc recorder automatically comprises a video frame detecting unit(226), a changing degree computing unit(228), and a microcomputer(202). The video frame detecting unit and the changing degree computing unit are included in the microcomputer. The video frame detecting unit extracts a video frame inputted to an MPEG(Motion Picture Experts Group) encoder(206) at pre-set time intervals under control of the microcomputer. The changing degree computing unit divides each video frame into a predetermined number of division areas and computes a color value of each division area. The color values of the neighbored video frames are compared and the number of the division area whose color value changing degree is over a pre-set value. The changing degree computing unit calculates changing degree of the video frames on the basis of the number of the division areas. The video frame whose changing degree is over the pre-set value is supplied to the microcomputer. The microcomputer separates and sets the chapter automatically by using the provided video frame and controls operation of a PGCI(Program Chain information) generating unit(208).
