A projection system is provided to reduce its overall system size and fabrication cost and to make an optical intensity and luminance distribution uniform by improving a diffractive efficiency of synthesized light. A light source(30) includes red, green and blue LEDs(31-33). A diffractive optical element(34) allows red, green and blue lights to transmit therethrough and be synthesized. An integrator(40) allows the synthesized light to be made incident thereon. An illumination lens(41) allows light, which has passed through the integrator(40), to be focused thereon. A panel(42) allows the light, which has passed through the illumination lens(41), to be inputted thereto. A prism(44) is positioned between the illumination lens(41) and the panel(42) and controls an optical path. A projection lens(45) allows light, which has passed through the prism(44), to be focused thereon.
