<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically extract a human body area in a general image and to enhance extraction performance. <P>SOLUTION: A face area F in an image is detected and a candidate area C estimated to include a human body area is determined based on the position information of the face area F detected. A determination is made as to whether or not each unit area constituting the candidate area contains a human body area. A set of unit areas determined to contain a human body area is determined as an estimated area E estimated to contain a human body area. The human body area Hu in the estimated area E is extracted. Until it is determined that the human body area Hu does not exist in areas around contours in the estimated area E, the estimated area E is expanded for updates.
