PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin birefringent film whose refractive index is three-dimensionally controlled. SOLUTION: The birefringent film has an optical indicatrix satisfying the following relationship: nz > nx = ny and contains at least one polycyclic compound having a -COOM group (wherein, M represents a counter ion).
