PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator capable of making the in-plane light intensity distribution of illuminating luminous flux radiated to an area to be illuminated more uniform than in the conventional manner, and improved in the efficiency of using light emitted from a solid light source. SOLUTION: The illuminator 100 is equipped with: an LD light source 10; a conical prism 20 changing light from the LD light source 10 to light having more uniform intensity distribution; a light guiding member 30 changing light emitted from the conical prism 20 to light having more uniform intensity distribution; and an ND filter 40 arranged on the light emitting side of the light guiding member 30 and having the in-plane light transmittance distribution of a reverse pattern to the pattern of the in-plane light intensity distribution of the light emitted from the light transmission member 30.
