A catalyst having noble metals deposited in optimal amounts. The catalyst has a coat layer in which an area upstream in an exhaust gas contains platinum deposited in an amount exceeding 0.75 g per liter of the support base, and the density of rhodium deposited in the coat layer has been regulated so that it is higher on the exhaust gas downstream side than on the exhaust gas upstream side. Since rhodium has been deposited at a high density on the exhaust gas downstream side, where the atmosphere is apt to become a rich atmosphere, the purification performance after idling is improved.
