The apparatus provides a guard and includes a sensor (5) for generating and detecting an electromagnetic field. This is arranged near a moveable part (1) which is not to be touched. An analyzer is connected to the sensor (5) for analyzing sensor signals generated by the sensor (5). The analyzer generates an analysis signal. A control unit is connected to the analyzer. The control unit is formed and operates so as to control the movement of the part (1) in dependence on the analysis signal. Independent claims also cover a method of protecting a moveable part from being touched.
