An industrial truck has a powered steering gear with a sensor that detects the angular deflection of the road wheel. The powered steering gear has a steering wheel or tiller that gives a correctional signal to a motor. The motor output is coupled to a gear whose output is to the steering lever and road wheel. A sensor registers the current position of the wheel steering lever. The motor output shaft is a hollow shaft whose cylindrical void accommodates the sensor drive shaft linked to the gear output side and operates in conjunction with the angle sensor.
