A back light unit for a portable terminal is provided to reduce a hot spot phenomenon according to the large radiation angle of a light source, thereby enhancing the illumination brightness. A light guide panel(210) includes opposite upper and lower surfaces. The first and second sides(216,218) are located between the upper and lower surfaces. At least one light source(230) is arranged oppositely at the first side and inputs a light beam to the inside of the light guide panel. A light extraction pattern(225) is formed on the light guide panel so that the light beam toward the inside of the light guide panel is outputted to the outside of the light guide panel. The end of the light guide panel including the first side includes at least one slant surface slanted toward the first side. At least one diffusion plate(250) is arranged on the light guide panel and scatters and transmits the inputted light beam. At least one prism sheet(260) is arranged on the light guide panel and condenses and transmits the inputted light beam.
