The present invention relates to a water-swellable hybrid material comprising a structurally crosslinked polymer matrix and inorganic particulate solids bound therein, having a time-dependent swelling behaviour corresponding to an uptake of water of at least 7.5 times the hybrid material's own weight within one hour, and also to its uses. The present invention further relates to a process for preparing this water-swellable hybrid material.
