The method involves selecting of a drive device (3), which applies a maximum traction power on a load carrying medium (2), from a series with gradated, given maximum traction power. The maximum traction power is larger than a half maximum pay load. A lift system is provided comprising a cabin (1) with an unloaded weight which moves a maximum pay load. The weight, in milligram, of a counterweight (4) is so optimized that the weight is equal to the unloaded weight and the difference between the maximum pay load of the cabin and the maximum traction power of the selected drive device.
