A lighting unit comprises electrical power generation means, electrical power storage means, a controller, and an electrical lighting device (40). The controller includes detection means operative to detect the presence of a person in the vicinity of the lighting unit. When the lighting device is operating on power supplied from the power storage means, the controller is operative to switch operation of the lighting device between a low-output mode and a high-output mode when the detection means detects the proximity of a person. The application also discloses a lighting unit in which the power generation means and the lighting unit may be rotated independently. The power generation means may be photovoltaic cells or a wind turbine and the lighting device may include LEDs. The power storage means may include a rechargeable battery. |
