A skin pricking device 10 comprises a housing 12, 14 and a lancet 26 disposed within the housing 12, 14, a firing mechanism for causing a tip of a needle 30 of the lancet 26 to be driven through an opening 18 and pierce a membrane 25 between the opening 18 and the needle 30. Housing 12, 14 may comprise of first 12, and second 14 housing portions telescopically moveable to each other. Lancet 26 and firing mechanism may be disposed in the first housing 12. The firing mechanism may comprise of a preloaded helical spring biasing means 38 coupled to an inner surface of the first housing 12 and also retracts the needle 30 after use. The lancet 26 may be retained in the first housing 12 in an armed position by a retaining means 32 comprising inward extending projections 36 overlapping a surface of a body 28 of the lancet 26. Lancet retaining means 32 also comprises angled tips 42 that contact with teeth 44 having angled surfaces 46 that cut through the membrane 25 and permit the lancet retaining means 32 to be laterally displaced and release the needle 30. One or more flanges 21 - 24 on the housings 12, 14 may be provided and engage with each other prior to and after actuation of the device. |
