A disc brake comprises a stationary U-shaped support member 8 straddling the outer periphery of a rotatable disc 2, a saddle member 12, 14, 16, Figs. 1 and 3, axially movable relatively to said member 8 and including a fluid pressure cylinder 26 which forms part of the saddle member and has a piston 30 therein, and a pair of friction pads 34, 36 engaging opposite faces of the disc 2, one pad being in fixed axial relationship with the piston and the other pad being in fixed axial relationship with the saddle member during brake application. The yoke members 12 and 14 of the saddle are connected by a brace member 16 on one side of disc 2 and by a cylinder casting 18 on the other side of the disc; the casting 18 and brace 16 may move together relatively to the U-shaped member 8 on which they are mounted, the member 8 being then subject only to circumferential forces caused by a brake application; such forces being transmitted through pins 42, Fig. 3. Mechanical means for applying the brake (as parking brake) comprises levers 90, 96, 98, Fig. 1, acting between the two pistons 30, Fig. 2, and may be used alternatively. The pistons are shown as acting on pads of the type illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 where the central part of the pad is normally spaced away from the disc and the backing member is bowed by the thrust pins 32a on the piston in order to flatten the friction pad.
