An image display device and an operating method thereof are provided to obtain screen ratio information necessary to display image data on a screen by parsing image supplementary information of image data transmitted from an image data source device, and display the image data according to the screen ratio requested by an image data source device transmitting image data. A decoder(102) receives data packets including image data and image supplementary information about the image data, and restores image signals and image supplementary information for the image data within the data packet. An image signal processor(108) processes the image signal, decoded by the decoder, into a displayable image signal format. A screen ratio setup unit(106) extracts screen ratio information by parsing the image supplementary information restored by the decoder, and sets a screen ratio through the extracted screen ratio information. A display unit(110) displays the image signal, processed by the image signal processor, according to the screen ratio set by the screen ratio setup unit.
