A method of cleaning fuel gas feed to an internal combustion engine comprises passing the fuel gas through a filter containing an ion-exchange resin 9. Preferably the resin is a granular, styrene-divinylbenzene, contained in a hollow container which may be presented in the form of a replaceable cartridge. Preferably the container is a chamber 1 with baffle plates 12, 13 provided with slots 16 and a condenser 6 through which fuel gas passes prior to cleaning. Advantageously the filter is regenerated by a hot air process or by washing with a solvent. Preferably the fuel gas is a biogas derived from the decomposition of waste materials such as landfill and contains quantities of siloxane impurities. Gas fired internal combustion engines that are run on contaminated fuel suffer from the buildup of internal deposits and corrosion which is a particular problem with engines fuelled by biogas, therefore by upstream filtering of the fuel via a filter containing an ion-exchange resin the internal combustion engine can run on full power for an extended period of time.
|
