Device for supporting a container by the neck (6) comprises a cylindrical base (8) with a peripheral channel (9) between a central core (10) and an outer wall (11) that is pierced with circular holes (12); a set of balls (13) in the channel, one for each hole, the balls having a larger diameter than the holes; and a spring (14) that forces the balls into the holes so that the balls partially project outside the holes to provide radial frictional contact with the inside of the neck. An independent claim is also included for an installation for transporting necked containers, comprising a chain of transport devices, each equipped with a support device as above.
