A 4-mercaptophenyl ester of acetic acid useful as a material for the synthesis of color developers, etc.; and a process for producing the ester. The 4-mercaptophenyl ester of acetic acid is represented by the formula (1): [Chemical formula 1] (1) (wherein Ac represents acetyl and R represents C1-4 alkyl). The process, which is for producing the 4-mercaptophenyl ester of acetic acid, is characterized by comprising reducing a 4-halosulfonylphenyl ester of acetic acid represented by the formula (2): [Chemical formula 2] (2) (wherein Ac represents acetyl; R represents C1-4 alkyl; and X represents halogeno).
