The invention refers to the use of Lactobacillus plan- tarum having a mannose-specific adhesin for the prepara- tion of a pharmaceutical composition inhibiting the bind- ing of pathogenic bacteria expressing mannose-specific ad- hesins to the epithelial cell surface. A strain of Lactobacil- lus plantarum which can be used in the invention adheres to D-mannose-coated agarose beads, and preferably belongs to a cluster of L. plantarum with more than 70 % similar- ity to L. plantarum 299 in terms of REA. The invention also refers to the use of said strains for the preparation of a phar- maceutical composition to be used in prophylatic and/or curative treatment of bacterial translocation, gastroenteritis and other diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria express- ing mannose-specific adhesins.
