A cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery is provided to prevent a drop in the capacity of a battery caused by a reaction between a cathode active material and an electrolyte, and to impart improved charge/discharge characteristics, lifespan characteristics, high-voltage characteristics, high-rate characteristics and thermal stability to a lithium secondary battery. A cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises: a core comprising a compound capable of reversible lithium intercalation/deintercalation; and a surface treating layer of an oxyfluoride compound containing a surface treating element and coated on the surface of the core. The surface treating element is at least one selected from the group consisting of Group 3-9 transition metals, Group 13-15 elements, lanthanide and a combination thereof. |
