822,462. Nuclear fusion reactor ; electric discharge tubes. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 14, 1953 [Jan. 14, 1952], No. 1034/52. Drawings to Specification. Classes 39(1) and 39(4) A thermo-nuclear reactor comprises a vessel defining a cavity, electric means for establishing and maintaining a continuous motion of electrons in an endless path within the cavity, entry means in the vessel for the entry of gas, and means for withdrawing gas from the vessel. The reactor may be substantially the same as in Specification 817,681 except that adjacent sections of the toroidal vessel are insulated from each other and are connected to an artificial line fed with radio-frequency energy so that the electron current is maintained by a synchronisation mechanism. The initial flow of electron current may be set up by switching off the current to the magnet surrounding the toroid ; this produces a discharge in the gas in the manner of a betatron. |
