RECOMBINANT BCG STRAINS WITH ATTENUATED IMMUNOSUPPRESIVE PROPERTIES

Strains of Mycobaterium that have decreased immunosuppressive properties are provided. The Mycobaterium strains are genetically engineered to express but not secrete super-oxide dismutase (Sod). The presence of cytosol bound Sod allows replication and growth of the Mycobacterium, but does not result in attenuation of the host immune response. The Mycobacteriumstrains provide improved properties for use as vaccines.
