<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor driving apparatus where stability and output performance of a motor at the time of detecting inverter abnormality can be secured with a simple and inexpensive apparatus structure. <P>SOLUTION: When a short fault occurs in an upper arm of a U phase 15, lower arms of a V phase 16 and a W phase 17, being counter arms, are switching-operated. When only the lower arm of the V phase 16 is turned on, a route of motor current Iu passing through an IGBT element Q6 from a V phase coil is formed. Thus, motor current Iu which feeds back to the phase where the short failure occurs is reduced. AC current is induced in a motor generator MG2 by switching-operating the counter arm of the arm where the short fault occurs. Thus, the motor generator MG2 can continuously be driven while an increase of passing current of the phase where the short fault occurs is suppressed without adding a new apparatus structure.
