PACKET PROCESSING METHOD AND PACKET PROCESSING APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a packet processing apparatus capable of developing stable receiving performance without causing degradation of the receiving performance even when packets requiring emergency processing arrive at a high frequency and realizing high receiving performance by the gather DMA transfer when other packets than the emergency packets arrive.

SOLUTION: The packet processing apparatus for receiving packets on a communication channel includes: a packet coupling section for coupling the packets received from the communication channel into one data block, a plurality of packet memories whose memory capacities differ from each other, and a means for selecting one of the packet memories most adaptable to the size of the data block during the coupling among the packet memories whose memory capacities differ from each other when the data block during the coupling includes the emergency packets and transfers the data blocks during the coupling to the packet memory selected from the packet coupling section.
